A Study on Water Pollution of the Physio-chemical Conditonns and Phytoplankton of the Han River

Abstract
For the purpose of studying the relationship between physio-chemical conditions and water quality level by phytoplankton of the Han River (running through Seoul), a study was conducted at 8 sampling points during the period from June 6 to July 2, 1974. Examination of physio-chemical water analysis such as temperature, pH, DO, BOD, Cl- and biological analysis has shown:
1. Water temperature was 18.5¡20.5¡É(June 6¡ June 7) and 22¡26¡É(June 30¡July 2).
2. Water depth was 11.5m at the first Han River bridge, 8.1m at kwangjang and between 3¡4m in other sampling points.
3. At all points pH was in the range of 7.0¡7.4 except Duksum and Bokwangdong where it was 7.5¡7.7.
4. DO was generally high; 5.3¡9.0mg/§¤. But at Nanjido and haengju was 3.3¡6.2mg/§¤.
5. Kwangjang and Duksum were not above the BOD criterion (4.0mg/§¤ at the source of water supply), though high enough for Bokwangdong 10.3mg/§¤and Nanjido 29.0mg/§¤.
6. BOD at the river side was 4.5¡10.2mg/§¤and at the center as 3.5¡7.0mg/§¤. It means that pollution diffused from river side to center.
7. Salinity of Nanjido was very high; 26.9¡33.3%
8. Among the classified phytoplankton, Coscinodiscus nitidus, Coscinodiscus radiatus and Triceratium favus are marine water planktons which were found at Heangju only. It means the intrusion of marine water.
9. At Kwangjang and Jamsil and Duksum which BOD was 3.5¡5.3mg/§¤, dominant species were Fragilaria consturens var venter and Diatoma elongatum belonging Chrysophyta. At Bokwangdong, the first Han River bridge and the second Han River bridge which BOD was 6.0¡10.3mg/§¤, dominant species were Cymbella ventricosa, Nitazchia palea and Synedra ulna belonging Chrysophyta and Oscillatoria tenuis belonging Chrysophyta. At Nanjido which BOD was 29.0mg/§¤. domonant species were Eugenal spp. beloning Euglenophyta.
10. The results of biological water analysis by saprobic system were as follows; Kwangjang was Oligosaprobic, Jamsil and Duksum were r-mesosaprobic, Bokwangdong and the first Han River bridge were ¥á-mesosaprobic, and the second Han River bridge, Nanjido and Heangju were from r-polysaprobic to
¥â-polysaprobic.
